Situated on the outer edge of the Hauraki Gulf is New Zealand’s only National Marine Park, Great Barrier Island is a mere 90 kilometres from Auckland City. Over 70% of the land is protected Conservation Park and with night skies rated ‘second to none’… the whole island is a Dark Sky Sanctuary.
To visit Great Barrier Island is to experience life off the grid.
Barrier Air and Fly My Sky run daily flights to the Island from Auckland Domestic Terminal. The flights across the gulf are very scenic and take around 30 minutes. Passengers disembark at Claris Airport near the centre of the island.
The Sealink operates a passenger and vehicle ferry to and from the Island. Services are limited in May, so check ahead of schedule to make sure the ferry is travelling on your dates.
Where to stay
The Island has an abundance of self-sufficient, sustainable and eco accommodation options across the island. All producing their own power, and collecting their own water, helping you minimise your carbon footprint.
