Solar panels

Solar panels, or Photovoltaics (PV), have become probably the most common method of generation on Great Barrier Island and are used solely or in conjunction with another source such as a wind-turbine or generator. They are cost effective, require little maintenance once installed, last a long time, and new panels have become more cost effective as time has gone on.

Initially they were used either to maintain a generator battery (to start a generator) or to charge batteries for a small 12V DC lighting system but as time has gone on they are fast becoming the sole method of power generation for many 240V AC systems.

The efficiency of solar panels is also increasing with today’s common panels converting around 20% of direct light into electricity and new technologies reaching a 46% rate of conversion.

If solar panels have a flaw, it is that they only generate power during daylight hours and they are dependent to a large extent on advances in battery technology to store that power for use in the night hours.

A low end system on the Island can be cobbled together for under $1000 as friends and family upgrade their systems and the panels are recycled by others. These are generally used to power lights, a laptop, and to charge devices such as phones.

The switch to a higher end system tends to come as power needs increase with the first leap for many residents being an electric fridge. As needs increase the solar array can become larger and larger with Kaitoke School using over 30 panels paired with a backup generator for cloudy days and to protect the batteries in peak usage.

Based on an average NZ consumption of 8096 kWh per year, 4 sunshine hours per day, using 300W panels would require 19 panels to power the average NZ house. Fortunately, by choosing energy efficient products, and an ‘Off The Grid’ life style, the need for such a large system can be reduced to fit a variety of budgets.
